History of Arcadia Township
When was Arcadia Township first settled?
European settlers first came to Arcadia in 1866. Dr. W. L. Dempster, G. W. Boss, and H. Huntington settled near Bar Lake. This lake is now known as Arcadia Lake. It got its old name because a large sandbar separated it from Lake Michigan.
How did Arcadia Township get started?
The township was officially set up in 1870, not long after the first settlers arrived. The village of Arcadia itself was founded later, in 1880.
In 1882, another village called Burnhamville was started on Bar Lake. It was built around a lumber mill. Burnhamville even had its own post office for a while, until 1895.
Who was Henry Starke?
A man named Henry Starke from Milwaukee played a big part in Arcadia's early days. He built a very successful lumber mill. This mill helped the town grow and become busy. Starke also helped build Trinity Lutheran Church. This church is still an important building in Arcadia today. It is even a Michigan state historic site.
Arcadia was a busy lumber town in the early 1900s. But in 1906, Henry Starke's lumber mill burned down. It was replaced by the Arcadia Furniture Factory.
Who is Harriet Quimby?
Arcadia Township is famous for being the birthplace of Harriet Quimby. She was America's very first female aviator, meaning she was the first American woman to fly an airplane. There is a special marker in Arcadia to remember her.
