Ardencroft is a small village in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. In 2020, about 226 people lived there. It's known for its unique history and community ideas.

Ardencroft was started in 1950. It grew out of two other villages nearby, Arden and Ardentown. The people who founded Ardencroft wanted to create a special way of life. This way of life was based on ideas from Henry George and William Morris.

One main idea was the "single tax" system. This means you don't pay taxes on your house itself. Instead, you only pay tax on the land your house sits on. The land is owned by a special trust, not by individuals. This system was meant to make housing more affordable for everyone.

Another idea was based on "arts and crafts" principles. This meant valuing nature and community. About half of Ardencroft's land is kept as woods and open spaces. There are also many footpaths that criss-cross through the village.

From the very beginning, Ardencroft welcomed people from all backgrounds. It was one of the first places to encourage different groups of people to live together. This happened even before the big changes of the Civil Rights Movement. The local school, the former Arden School, also allowed students of all races to attend around this time.

A famous civil rights activist named Pauline A. Young (1900-1991) lived in Ardencroft. She was a writer, pilot, librarian, and educator. Pauline Young joined the NAACP at age 12. She worked with important leaders like W. E. B. Du Bois in the 1930s. In 1965, she even marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in Alabama.
