Disney's Ariel the Little Mermaid, often called simply Ariel the Little Mermaid, is a fun video game released in 1992. It was made by BlueSky Software for the Sega Genesis, Game Gear, and Master System consoles. The game is based on the popular 1989 Disney movie, The Little Mermaid.

Some players found Ariel the Little Mermaid a bit easy and quick to finish. It was sometimes compared to another game called Ecco the Dolphin. A special version of the game for the Master System was released only in Brazil by a company called Tec Toy.

Gameplay

In Ariel the Little Mermaid, you get to play as either Ariel or King Triton! Your big mission is to break Ursula's evil spell on the underwater kingdom of Atlantica. Ursula has turned many merfolk into strange plant-like creatures called polyps.

Your Mission

If you pick Ariel, you'll also need to save King Triton from Ursula. If you pick Triton, you'll save Ariel! Ariel uses her beautiful singing to defeat enemies and break the polyp spell. Triton, on the other hand, shoots powerful lightning balls to do the same.

Levels and Challenges

There are four exciting levels to explore in the game. In each level, you need to find and rescue all the polyps before facing a big boss!

  • The first level is a colorful reef maze. Watch out for sharks, clams, and eels!
  • Next, you'll explore a spooky sunken ship. Ghosts and skeleton pirates might try to stop you here.
  • Then, you'll visit the ancient remains of Atlantis. Be careful of statues that shoot arrows and frisbees!
  • Finally, you'll brave a series of hot volcanic caves.

Difficulty Settings

Ariel the Little Mermaid has three difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, and Challenging. The harder the setting, the less money you start with. It also takes more time and effort to reach the boss in each stage.

  • On Easy, the level automatically takes you to the boss once you've rescued all your friends.
  • On Normal, you can use a map to help you, but you'll need to find the boss area yourself.
  • On Challenging, there is no map to guide you.

Helpful Friends

You can get help from three other characters during your adventure:

  • Sebastian can scare away enemies for you.
  • Flounder can move big rocks that block your path.
  • An original character called The Digger Fish can help you find buried treasure.

Items and Power-ups

Throughout the levels, you'll find keys that open treasure chests. These chests can contain money, extra lives, or health to keep you going. You can use the money you collect to buy power-ups. You can also buy help from one of your fish friends at Scuttle's shop.
