Arnold is a special kind of community in Calaveras County, California, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the government counts for population, but it's not an official city or town. Arnold is located on State Route 4. In 2020, about 3,288 people lived there.

History of Arnold

Arnold got its name from Bob and Bernice Arnold. In 1927, they opened a place called the Ebbetts Pass Inn. Before that, the area was mostly two big ranches where people worked in the logging industry, cutting down trees.

The Ebbetts Pass Inn was an important stop for travelers using the Ebbetts Pass route. It also offered rooms for people visiting the nearby Calaveras Big Trees State Park. In 1928, a Boy Scout camp called Camp Wolfeboro was started close by. It's still open today! Arnold's first post office opened in 1934, and Bernice Arnold even worked there as the postmistress.

In 2015, a large wildfire called the Butte Fire happened. It destroyed many homes in communities nearby. Luckily, Arnold was saved because the weather changed. This fire made people in Arnold focus even more on fire safety. Even so, in 2019, Arnold was still considered a "very high fire hazard severity zone." This is because it's on a ridge, surrounded by thick forests with many trees that have died from drought and beetles.

Geography and Location

Arnold is located in a beautiful area. The total area of the community is about 9.13 square miles (23.65 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.

Because Arnold is on a forested ridge with strong winds, it's at a high risk for wildfires. Organizations like CalFire work to help keep the community safe from fires.

Arnold's Climate

Arnold has a climate often called "Mediterranean." This means it usually has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
