Arnprior is a small village, called a hamlet, located in Scotland. It's part of the Stirling area, about 12 miles west of the city of Stirling. Arnprior is one of the smallest communities in its region. It sits right next to the beautiful Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve. It's also very close to the eastern edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, which is home to the lovely Lake of Menteith.

What Happened to Arnprior School?

Arnprior used to have its own primary school until 1996. It closed because there weren't enough students. Two other nearby schools, Croftamie and Kinbuck Primary Schools, also closed around the same time for similar reasons. After the school closed, part of the building was turned into a nursery for younger children. Students who used to go to Arnprior Primary School were then moved to Buchlyvie Primary School.

What Does the Name Arnprior Mean?

The name Arnprior comes from a Gaelic word, 'earrann'. This word means 'a division of land'. People think the name might have come about when Inchmahome Priory was founded in 1238. This priory was started by Walter Comyn, who was the Earl of Menteith at the time.

There are other places in the area with 'Arn' in their names. Some of these names tell you about the size of the place, like Arnmore. Others might tell you who owned the land before, such as Arnfinlay.

Did you know that a town in Canada is named after Arnprior? The town of Arnprior, Ontario, was named by its founder, Archibald McNab. This was because the hamlet of Arnprior in Scotland was his family's original home.

Businesses in Arnprior

Arnprior might be small, but it has some interesting businesses. The most well-known is Arnprior Farm. In 2015, the farm decided to try something new to grow its business. They started what they say is "Scotland's original and best pumpkin patch." This means people can visit the farm to pick their own pumpkins, especially around Halloween!

Besides the farm, Arnprior also has a hair salon. There are also businesses that work with agricultural mechanics. These are people who fix and maintain farm machinery.
