The arrondissement of Gex is a special administrative area in France. It's like a district within the Ain department, which is part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The main town, or capital, of this arrondissement is Gex. This area is also known as the historical Pays de Gex.

History of Gex Arrondissement
When the Ain department was first created in 1800, the Gex area was not included. The arrondissement of Gex was officially formed later, in 1815. It was actually removed in 1926, but then it became an arrondissement again in 1933.
Geography of Gex Arrondissement
The Gex arrondissement is located in the northeastern part of the Ain department. It's the smallest arrondissement in the department. It covers about 426.2 square kilometers (164.6 square miles).
In 2014, about 89,200 people lived here. This means there were about 209 people living in each square kilometer.
The Gex arrondissement shares its borders with several other areas:
- To the north and northwest, it borders the Jura department.
- To the northeast and east, it borders Switzerland.
- To the southeast, it borders the Haute-Savoie department.
- To the southwest, it borders the Nantua arrondissement.
