History
The Ain department was created in 1800. The arrondissement of Belley was one of the original parts of this new department.
Geography
The Belley arrondissement is located in the southernmost part of the Ain department. It covers an area of about 1,394.5 km2 (538.4 sq mi). In 2014, about 98,110 people lived here. This means there were about 70.4 people living in each square kilometer.
This area is in the southeastern part of the department. It shares borders with other areas:
- To the north, it borders the Nantua arrondissement.
- To the northeast, it touches the Haute-Savoie department.
- To the east, it borders the Savoie department.
- To the south, it is next to the Isère department.
- To the west, it borders the Bourg-en-Bresse arrondissement.
