Geography of the Arrondissement
The Montmorillon arrondissement is located in the southern part of the Vienne department. It shares its borders with two other arrondissements in Vienne: Poitiers to the northwest and Châtellerault to the northeast.
This area also borders several other French departments. To the east, it touches the Indre department. To the southeast, you'll find the Haute-Vienne department. The Charente department is to the south, and the Deux-Sèvres department is to the west.
The Montmorillon arrondissement covers a large area of about 2,998.8 square kilometers (about 1,158 square miles). In 2014, about 74,852 people lived here. This means there were about 25 people living in each square kilometer. Even though it's the largest area in Vienne, it has the fewest people living in it.
How Montmorillon is Organized
France is divided into different administrative areas to help manage the country. These include regions, departments, arrondissements, cantons, and communes.
Cantons in Montmorillon
Cantons are smaller areas that group together several towns or villages. Since a change in how cantons are organized in France, their borders don't always perfectly match the arrondissement borders.
In the Montmorillon arrondissement, there are two main cantons that are fully within its borders:
- Civray
- Lussac-les-Châteaux
Some other cantons, like Chauvigny, Lusignan, and Montmorillon, have parts of their area in this arrondissement and parts in other arrondissements.
Communes in Montmorillon
The smallest administrative units in France are called communes. These are like towns or villages. The Montmorillon arrondissement has 95 communes. Each commune has its own unique code, called an INSEE code.
