When the Dordogne département was first created on 17 February 1800, the area we now call Sarlat-la-Canéda was part of it. Back then, it was simply known as the Arrondissement of Sarlat.
Later, on 1 March 1965, two towns named Sarlat and La Canéda joined together. Because of this, the name of the arrondissement was changed to Sarlat-la-Canéda.
