Asier del Horno Cosgaya (born 19 January 1981) is a Spanish footballer who has now retired. He mostly played as a left back, which is a defensive position on the left side of the field.

Asier became well-known during his time with Athletic Bilbao in Spain. He played in 126 official games for them over five years and scored 17 goals. After that, he moved to Chelsea in England. There, he helped his team win the Premier League title in the 2005–06 season.

Del Horno was supposed to play for Spain in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. However, an injury right before the tournament stopped him from going. He later went back to Spain to play for Valencia. For the rest of his career, he was often loaned out to other clubs. He faced many injuries in his later years. Overall, he played 187 games and scored 15 goals in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league.

Asier del Horno's Club Journey

Starting at Athletic Bilbao

Asier del Horno was born in Barakaldo, Biscay, Spain. He started his football journey at Athletic Bilbao in 1999. He was known for his strong tackles and being good at heading the ball. He quickly moved up through the club's youth teams.

Even though he started as a central defender, his speed and ability to help with attacks meant he was moved to play on the left side of the field. He made his first team debut in the 2000–01 La Liga season when he was only 19. In his first season at the San Mamés Stadium, he played 14 games. He helped his team finish in 12th place in the league.

Playing for Chelsea

In June 2005, Asier del Horno joined Chelsea in England. He won the only league championship of his career with Chelsea. They won the Premier League title in the 2005–06 season.

While playing for Chelsea, del Horno played in 34 matches in total. He scored one goal against Tottenham Hotspur in a 2–0 win on 27 August 2005. In a UEFA Champions League game against FC Barcelona in February 2006, he received a red card for a foul. Chelsea lost that game and the overall match.

Time at Valencia

On 21 July 2006, del Horno moved back to Spain to play for Valencia CF. He signed a six-year contract. He was seen as a good replacement for Amedeo Carboni, who had retired. Asier had an injury that kept him off the field for most of his first season. He finally played his first game for Valencia on 3 March 2007. It was a 1–0 home win against RC Celta de Vigo.

Later, his manager at Valencia decided to put him on the transfer list. This meant del Horno would not keep his spot for the next season. On the last day of the transfer window, he agreed to join his old club Athletic Bilbao on a one-year loan. He returned to Valencia after a season where he was often injured. His injury problems continued at Valencia. In early 2010, he was loaned to Real Valladolid until the end of the season. He played regularly there, but his team was still relegated to a lower division.

For the 2010–11 La Liga season, del Horno was loaned out again. This time, he joined Levante UD, a team that had just been promoted. He played often in both defensive positions. Levante managed to stay in the league, but Asier missed the end of the season due to ongoing physical problems.

Later Career and Retirement

After returning to Valencia, del Horno's contract was ended. In August 2011, he joined Levante permanently.

He continued to deal with injuries during the 2011–12 La Liga season. He found it hard to get the left-back position from Juanfran, who was 35 years old. After this season, del Horno was released by Levante.

Playing for Spain

Asier del Horno made his debut for the Spanish national team on 3 September 2004, against Scotland. He scored the winning goal in a 1–0 friendly game against England in Madrid, two months later.

An ankle injury forced del Horno to leave the Spanish squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. His spot was then taken by Mariano Pernía.

Del Horno also played for the Basque Country regional team.
