The Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) is a special golf tournament. It takes place in Georgia, USA. The tournament uses two famous golf courses. These are Augusta National Golf Club and Champions Retreat Golf Club. The ANWA started in 2019. It is a 54-hole event, meaning players play 54 holes of golf. This type of play is called stroke play.

The tournament is split between the two locations. The first two rounds happen at Champions Retreat Golf Club. These rounds are played on Wednesday and Thursday. There are 72 players at the start. After these rounds, only the top 30 players continue. If there's a tie for the last spots, players have a playoff. On Friday, all players get to practice at Augusta National. The final round is played on Saturday at Augusta National. This tournament happens just before the famous Masters Tournament.

Winning the ANWA is a big deal for amateur golfers. The winner gets invited back to the ANWA for the next five years. She also gets to play in other major tournaments. These include the U.S. Women's Open and the Women's British Open. She can also play in other amateur events. All these invitations are valid as long as she remains an amateur golfer.

Why the Tournament Started

For many years, Augusta National Golf Club did not have women members. In 2012, this changed. The club welcomed its first two female members. They were Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore.

Before the 2018 Masters Tournament, a new leader at Augusta National made a big announcement. Chairman Fred Ridley said the club would host a new women's amateur event. This event would start in 2019. He believed this tournament would greatly help women's golf. It would make the sport more popular.

Some people worried the ANWA might conflict with another major women's golf event. This was the ANA Inspiration. But Chairman Ridley talked with the LPGA Tour leader. They agreed that any event helping women's golf was a good thing. The ANA Inspiration later changed its name to The Chevron Championship. It also moved to a new location and time.

Tournament History

The first ANWA tournament was in 2019. It was very exciting. Jennifer Kupcho and María Fassi battled for the win. Kupcho played amazingly in the final holes. She scored five strokes under par in the last six holes. She won by four strokes with a total score of -10. Kupcho even made an eagle on the thirteenth hole. For this, she received special crystal glasses.

The 2020 tournament was canceled. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 Masters Tournament was also moved to a later date that year. All players invited to the 2020 ANWA were invited back for 2021. They could play if they were still amateur golfers.
