The Augusta National Women's Amateur (or ANWA) is a special golf tournament for women. It takes place in Georgia, USA. Parts of the tournament are played at the famous Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta. Other parts are at Champions Retreat Golf Club in nearby Evans. This exciting 54-hole tournament, where players count every shot (called stroke play), first started in 2019.

The ANWA tournament is played over three days. The first two rounds happen on Wednesday and Thursday at Champions Retreat Golf Club. There are 72 players competing in these rounds. After these two days, only the top 30 players get to move on. If there's a tie for the last spots, players have a playoff.

On Friday, all 72 players get to practice at Augusta National. This is a great chance for everyone to experience the famous course. The final round is played on Saturday at Augusta National. The tournament always happens the week before the Masters Tournament, which is a very famous men's golf event.

The winner of the ANWA gets some amazing opportunities. They are invited to play in the next five ANWA tournaments. They also get to play in major professional events like the U.S. Women's Open and Women's British Open that same year. Plus, they can play in other amateur events from important golf organizations. All these invitations are only if the winner remains an amateur player.

How the Tournament Started

For many years, Augusta National Golf Club did not have women as official members. But things began to change in 2012. That year, the club welcomed its first two female members: Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore.

Then, in 2018, the chairman of Augusta National, Fred Ridley, made a big announcement. He said the club would start hosting the Augusta National Women's Amateur in 2019. He believed that having this tournament at Augusta National would help women's golf grow a lot.

Some people wondered if this new event would cause problems with another big women's golf tournament, the ANA Inspiration. But Mr. Ridley talked with the head of the LPGA Tour. They both agreed that anything that helps women's golf become more popular is a good thing for everyone. The ANA Inspiration later changed its name to The Chevron Championship and moved to a new location.

Tournament Highlights

The very first ANWA in 2019 was super exciting! The final round was a close match between Jennifer Kupcho and María Fassi. Jennifer Kupcho played incredibly well on the last six holes, scoring five shots under par. She ended up winning by four shots with a total score of -10.

Jennifer's amazing play included an eagle on the thirteenth hole. An eagle means finishing a hole in two strokes less than what's expected (par). For her eagle, Jennifer received special crystal glasses, just like players do in the Masters Tournament.

In 2020, the tournament had to be cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This also caused the 2020 Masters Tournament to be moved to November. But all the players who were invited in 2020 were invited back for the 2021 tournament, as long as they were still amateur players.

The ANWA tournament uses two different golf courses.
