Auxvasse Creek: A Journey Through Missouri
Auxvasse Creek begins its journey in a place called its headwaters. This is where the stream first starts, like the very beginning of a path. Its headwaters are found just north of Interstate 70, west of a small community called Eastville.
The Creek's Path
From its starting point, Auxvasse Creek first flows north. Then, south of the community of Hatton, it turns and flows towards the east. As it continues, it picks up more water from a smaller stream called Fourmile Branch.
The creek then winds its way generally towards the east-southeast. It even goes under a major road, U.S. 54. This happens between the towns of Auxvasse (to the north) and Kingdom City (to the south).
After this, the stream turns southeast and passes under Interstate 70 again, this time northeast of Calwood. It keeps flowing southeast, then south, going past the community of Toledo.
Joining Other Waters
Auxvasse Creek gets even bigger when it meets another stream called Cow Creek. This happens north of Reform. After that, west of Reform, it joins with the waters of Crows Fork Creek.
The creek then turns south and flows past the Reform Conservation Area, a place dedicated to protecting nature. Finally, just west of Steedman, Auxvasse Creek reaches the wide, flat area next to the Missouri River, known as the floodplain. It crosses Missouri Route 94 and then joins the Missouri River west of Chamois. This meeting point is called the confluence.
What Does "Auxvasse" Mean?
The name "Auxvasse" comes from the French language. It means "with mud." This name likely describes the muddy banks or bottom of the creek.
