Axel Urup's Life and Career

Early Life and Military Training

In 1621, Axel Urup traveled to other countries. He served in the Dutch army, helping to defend the city of Bergen op Zoom. After that, he visited England, France, and Italy.

He returned home and joined the Danish army. In 1625, he became an ensign (a junior officer). He fought in the Danish part of the Thirty Years' War. At the Battle of Lutter in 1626, he was captured. However, he was later set free in a prisoner exchange.

In 1627, he started working as a military engineer. He went back to the Netherlands in 1629. There, he helped in the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch and was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

Building Forts and Leading Troops

In 1630, Axel Urup was put in charge of building defenses in Jutland. The next year, he founded the Christianspris fortress near Kiel. By 1635, he was given control of this fortress as a "fief" (land granted for service). He was also named Governor and Engineer of the Realm.

In 1638, he became a colonel and was asked to create a new regiment of German soldiers. During the Torstenson War in 1643, he was captured again but soon released. From 1645 to 1648, he served as governor of Christianspris once more. In 1647, he worked on strengthening the defenses of Copenhagen. He also finished rebuilding the Christian IV's Arsenal, a place where weapons were stored.

Important Roles in Denmark

In 1648, Axel Urup was made a Knight of the Order of the Elephant. This was a very high honor. He was also given control of Christianopel and later Copenhagen as fiefs.

In 1653, he became the commander of an infantry regiment on Zealand. During a serious plague in 1654, he stayed in Copenhagen. He helped govern the city while the main leader was away.

In 1655, he became a member of the Privy Council. This was a group of important advisors to the king. He also received large new fiefs. He traveled with Crown Prince Christian to Norway.

In 1657, he became the commander of the Danish army in Scania during the Scanian War. He was given control of the Fief of Malmø. Later that year, he became the Generalissimus (supreme commander) of all Danish troops in Scania. In 1658, he took over from Anders Bille as Rigsmarsk, which was a very powerful military position.

Later Years and Justice

In 1659, Axel Urup joined a new War Council. He played a key role in defending Copenhagen during a siege. He was right by the king's side during the Assault on Copenhagen in 1659. The next year, he helped with the talks that led to the Treaty of Copenhagen, which ended the war.

From 1661 to 1670, he served as a justice in the new Supreme Court. This meant he helped make important legal decisions. He was also granted control of Dalum Abbey and St. Canute's Abbey on the island of Funen.
