Azo compounds are special organic compounds. They have a unique group of atoms called a diazenyl group. This group connects two other parts of the molecule, often called R and R′. These R and R′ parts can be either aryl or alkyl groups.

The name "azo" comes from the French word "azote," which means nitrogen. It also comes from a Greek word meaning "not alive." This is because nitrogen gas does not support life.

Many items we use every day, like textiles (fabrics) and leather, get their bright colors from azo dyes and pigments.

Aryl Azo Compounds: Bright Colors!

Aryl azo compounds are usually strong and stable. They often form crystals. Azobenzene is a good example of an aromatic azo compound. It mostly exists in a "trans" shape. But if light shines on it, it can change into a "cis" shape.

These compounds can be made through a process called azo coupling. This is a chemical reaction where two parts join together. It usually happens when a special chemical, called an aryl diazonium cation, connects with another aryl ring. This reaction works best near 0°C (freezing point of water).

Aryl azo compounds have very bright colors, like reds, oranges, and yellows. This is why they are often used as dyes. You might know them as azo dyes. For example, Disperse Orange 1 is an azo dye.

Some azo compounds, like methyl orange, are used as indicators. They change color depending on if a liquid is an acid or a base. This helps scientists tell the difference.

Did you know that many DVD-R and some CD-R discs use a blue azo dye? This dye is part of the layer that records information on the disc!

Alkyl Azo Compounds: Making Plastics

Aliphatic azo compounds are less common than aryl azo compounds. In these compounds, the R and R′ parts are "aliphatic," meaning they are simpler carbon chains.

One important alkyl azo compound is azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). This chemical is used a lot to start reactions that make polymers, which are long chains of molecules. Polymers are used to make plastics.

AIBN works by breaking apart when heated. It releases nitrogen gas and forms two smaller pieces called "radicals." These radicals then start the process of linking other molecules together to form long chains.

For example, if you mix styrene and maleic anhydride with AIBN and heat them, they will join together to form a new type of plastic.

Some simple dialkyl diazo compounds, like diethyldiazene, are not very stable. Because they are unstable, they can sometimes be risky and might even explode.

Safety and Rules

Many azo pigments are safe to use. However, some types, like dinitroaniline orange, might not be safe. They have been found to cause changes in cells. Some studies have also linked certain azo pigments to skin problems.

Rules in Europe

In Europe, there are rules about azo dyes. Some azo dyes can break down into certain chemicals called "aromatic amines." If consumer products contain these specific amines from azo dyes, they were not allowed to be made or sold in European Union countries after September 2003. This rule helped make sure products are safer for people to use.
