Backyard Hockey (series) facts for kids

Backyard Hockey is a cool series of ice hockey video games. It was made by companies like Humongous Entertainment and Mistic Software. Atari and Infogrames helped publish them. The first game came out in June 2002 for computers running Microsoft Windows. Later, other games in the series were made for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS.

There are four Backyard Hockey games in total. These include the first Backyard Hockey, Backyard Hockey 2005, and versions for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. Humongous Entertainment made the first two games. For the Game Boy and DS versions, Mistic Software also helped develop them.

Game Fun: How to Play

Just like other games in the Backyard Sports series, you get to create your own hockey team! You can pick from over 30 different "neighborhood kids." Each kid has their own special skills and weaknesses. This means some kids might be super fast, while others have a powerful shot.

You can also choose real National Hockey League (NHL) hockey players as kids for your team. Some famous NHL players who appear as kids in the game include Steve Yzerman, Mike Modano, Joe Sakic, Jaromír Jágr, Jarome Iginla, Martin Brodeur, and Curtis Joseph.

On the Ice

In the game, you control your players during an ice hockey match. Sometimes, special power-ups appear in the middle of the ice. If your team grabs a power-up, it can give you a big advantage! For example, a power-up might make all the players on the other team fall down. Another might give your team super speed.

Backyard Hockey is different from most ice hockey games. You won't see any fighting between players. Also, the game calls very few penalties. This keeps the game fun and focused on scoring goals!
