How Baden Began
The oldest known house in Baden was built in the early 1800s. This spot became a popular stopping place for farmers. They would rest here on their way to Pittsburgh to sell their animals. Baden officially started as a village in 1838. It was named after a famous resort town in Germany called Baden-Baden, which is near the Black Forest.
Growth and Development

Mills for cutting wood (lath mills) and grinding grain (gristmills) also operated here. Baden became an official borough in 1858. It grew even more when steel mills and oil wells appeared nearby. The growth of railroads, like the large Conway Yard, also helped Baden expand. Today, the Conway Yard is run by Norfolk Southern.
