Bailey Colin Wright, born on July 28, 1992, is an Australian professional footballer. He plays as a strong defender, usually in the centre of the field. He currently plays for the Singapore Premier League club Lion City Sailors. Bailey also proudly represents the Australian national team.
Before joining Lion City Sailors, Bailey played his entire senior career in England. He played for well-known clubs like Preston North End, Bristol City, and Sunderland. He was chosen to be part of Australia's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He also joined the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Bailey Wright's Football Journey: Club Career Highlights
Starting Out: Early Football Days
Bailey Wright began his football journey at Langwarrin when he was young. He then played a season each for Mornington and Dandenong Thunder. People quickly noticed his talent. In 2007, he was chosen for the Victorian state team.
He improved his skills at the Victorian Institute of Sport in 2008. In 2009, he returned to Langwarrin and played in some senior league games. Later that year, he moved to England. He signed a two-year scholarship with Preston North End.
Preston North End: Growing as a Player
In his first season at Preston North End, Bailey mostly played for the reserve and under-18 teams. In April, he joined the senior squad for a game against Coventry City. He made his first senior appearance in the League Cup in the 2010–11 season. He played the whole game as Preston won 5–0 against Stockport County.
In December 2010, Bailey signed a professional contract for two and a half years. He made his league debut for Preston in March 2011 against Norwich City. His first professional goal for Preston came on April 7, 2012, against MK Dons.
For the 2012–13 season, Bailey was voted 'Young Player of the Year' for Preston North End. In May 2013, he signed a new two-year contract. He helped Preston win promotion in 2015. They beat Swindon Town 4–0 at Wembley Stadium.
Bristol City: New Challenges and Captaincy
On January 6, 2017, Bailey Wright joined Bristol City. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. He made his debut the next day in an FA Cup game against Fleetwood Town. He scored his first goal for Bristol City in a 1–1 draw with Norwich City in March 2017.
At the start of the 2017–18 season, Bailey was named captain of Bristol City. He led the team to the semi-finals of the 2017–18 EFL Cup. They beat Premier League teams like Watford and Manchester United. Bristol City lost to Manchester City in the semi-final. Bailey left Bristol City in July 2020.
Sunderland: Trophies and Promotion
Bailey signed a six-month loan deal with League One club Sunderland in January 2020. In August 2020, he signed a permanent two-year deal with Sunderland. He scored his first goal for Sunderland in a 2–2 draw against Rochdale in October 2020.
On July 1, 2023, Sunderland announced that Bailey was leaving the club. He played 107 games for Sunderland and was club captain. During his time there, he helped them win their first trophy since 1973. This was the 2020-21 EFL Trophy at Wembley Stadium. He also helped them get promoted back to the English second division in 2022.
Loan to Rotherham United
Bailey joined another Championship club, Rotherham United, on loan in January 2023. He made his debut for Rotherham on February 4. It was a goalless draw against Sheffield United.
Lion City Sailors: A New Adventure in Singapore
On July 9, 2023, Bailey Wright moved to Southeast Asia. He signed a two-year contract with the Singapore Premier League club Lion City Sailors. He made his debut for the club on July 11. On July 31, after a suspension, Bailey scored two goals in a 5–2 win against Tanjong Pagar United.
In his first season, he helped the club win the 2023 Singapore Cup. They beat Hougang United 3-1 in the final. For the 2024–25 season, Bailey changed his squad number to 26. He helped the club win the 2024 Singapore Community Shield in May 2024. In an 2024–25 AFC Champions League Two game, he scored an important goal against Persib Bandung.

Youth Teams: Playing for Australia's Future
Bailey Wright was part of the Australia U17 squad. They reached the quarter-finals of the AFC U-16 Championship. They just missed out on a spot in the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. They lost 3–2 to United Arab Emirates.
Senior Team: Playing for the Socceroos
Bailey was chosen by coach Ange Postecoglou for Australia's 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He was one of two new players, but he did not play in the tournament.
He made his debut for the Australia national team on September 8, 2014. It was a friendly match against Saudi Arabia in London. He scored a header in his debut game, helping Australia win 3–2.
Bailey was called up for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. He played in all three of the team's group stage matches. He was also in the first squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. However, he did not make it into the final 23-man team.
Bailey was selected for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He came on as a substitute in the last group stage game against Denmark on November 30, 2022.
