The Bald Mountains are a cool mountain range in the southeastern United States. They sit right on the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. These mountains are part of the bigger Blue Ridge Mountains, which are themselves part of the huge Appalachian Mountains. The Bald Mountains get their name from special grassy areas called "balds" found on their tops.
Discover the Bald Mountains
This mountain range stretches from the Pigeon River in the south to the Nolichucky River in the north. It includes parts of several counties. In Tennessee, you'll find parts in Cocke, Greene, and Unicoi counties. In North Carolina, parts are in Madison and Yancey counties.
The famous Great Smoky Mountains are to the south of the Bald Mountains. To the north, across the Nolichucky River, are the Unaka Mountains.
What Are "Balds"?
The Bald Mountains get their name from something unique: "grassy balds." These are open, grassy areas found on top of the highest peaks. It's unusual to find large grassy areas above the tree line in the Appalachian Mountains. Scientists are still studying why these balds exist. They make for amazing views!
Exploring the Mountains
A lot of the Bald Mountains are protected land. They are part of the Cherokee National Forest and the Pisgah National Forest. These forests help keep the mountains wild and beautiful.
The famous Appalachian Trail runs right along the top of the Bald Mountains. This long hiking trail stretches for thousands of miles. Hikers can enjoy incredible views as they walk through this part of the range.
There are also some towns located within or near the Bald Mountains. These include Erwin and Del Rio in Tennessee. In North Carolina, you'll find Hot Springs.
The highest point in the Bald Mountains is a peak called Big Bald. It stands tall at about 5,516 feet (1,681 meters) above sea level. It's a great spot to see those famous grassy balds!
