What's in a Name?

The name Balmoral comes from a Scottish Gaelic phrase, Baile Mhoireil. This means 'beautiful residence' or 'majestic castle'. It sounds like a pretty grand place, right?

Early Days and Growth

Back on 25 June 1927, a new area called Panorama Heights was sold. It had 53 special spots for homes. This area was on Fifth Avenue in Balmoral.

Balmoral also got its own high school! Balmoral State High School first opened its doors on 3 February 1958.

Saints Peter and Paul's School

A Catholic school, Saints Peter and Paul's, started in the area on 3 February 1916. It was run by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. About 200 students attended when it first opened. Today, this school is located within Balmoral. In 1996, John Power became the first principal who wasn't a nun or priest.

In the 2011 census, Balmoral had 3,827 people. Slightly more than half were female (51.8%) and 48.2% were male. The average age was 35 years old. This was a bit younger than the average for all of Australia.

Balmoral has two main schools:

  • Sts Peter and Paul's School: This is a Catholic primary school for students from Prep to Year 6. It's located at 33 Alexandra Street. In 2018, it had 653 students.
  • Balmoral State High School: This is a government high school for students from Year 7 to Year 12. You can find it on the corner of Thynne Road and Lytton Road. In 2018, 554 students were enrolled here. The high school also has a special program for students with extra learning needs.

There isn't a government primary school right in Balmoral. Students usually go to Bulimba State School in nearby Bulimba or Morningside State School in Morningside.
