History of Baneh
Baneh has always been an important city because of its location. It was very close to the Ottoman Empire, a large and powerful empire in the past. This made Baneh a key place for trade and politics.
Early Rulers and Influence
In the past, Baneh was part of three important Kurdish regions. These were called Ardalan, Baban, and Mokryan. The old city of Baneh had two strong castles. A powerful family called the Eḵtīār-al-Dīn family usually ruled the city. They were respected for both their religious and political leadership.
During the time of the Safavid rulers, this family was highly regarded. They even received the special title of 'sultan'. The rulers of Baneh were also responsible for protecting a large area, from Khoy to Kermanshah. In the 1500s, a ruler named Mīrzā Beg became quite independent in Baneh and the areas around it.
Challenges and Changes
In the 1700s and 1800s, Baneh faced difficult times. Many people in the city became sick during widespread illnesses. This caused a big decrease in the population. Later, in 1944, the city experienced some unrest. In the 1980s, during the Iran–Iraq War, Baneh was affected by bombings. Many local people had to leave their homes and move to Iraq for safety. A lot of the region was damaged during this time.
