History of Barnett

Barnett has had a few different names over the years. It was first called "Stone House" in 1858 when a post office opened there. Later, in 1875, its name changed to "Barnetsville." For a short time, it was even called "Marysville."

The town was rebuilt in 1880 after a tornado caused damage. That's when it got its current name, Barnett. This name came from an early settler in the area, Mr. Barnet.

A special old building in the city, the Jesse Ratcliff House, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's an important historical site.

Geography and Location

Barnett is located in the eastern part of Morgan County. It sits on the south side of Missouri Route 52. This road can take you about 11 miles northwest to Versailles, which is the main town of the county. If you go about 6 miles southeast, you'll reach Eldon.

The city covers a total area of about 0.27 square miles (0.71 square kilometers), and all of it is land. Barnett is built on a ridge, which is like a raised line of land. Water from the north side of this ridge flows into Wilkes Creek. This creek eventually joins the Moreau River. Water from the south side flows into Indian Creek, which leads to the Lake of the Ozarks. Both the Moreau River and the Osage River (which feeds the Lake of the Ozarks) are part of the larger Missouri River system.
