The Milbank Arms

Barningham is a small, quiet village located in County Durham, a beautiful area in the Pennines of England. It's known for its peaceful countryside and historic buildings.

A Look Back in Time

Barningham has a long history, even appearing in the famous Domesday Book. This book was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086. It listed who owned land and what was on it.

In 1066, before the Normans arrived, an Anglo-Saxon lord named Thor owned Barningham. By 1086, after the Norman Conquest, the land belonged to Enisant Musard. He was a tenant of Count Alan of Brittany.

For many years, Barningham was part of Yorkshire. But in 1974, it became part of County Durham.

What's in Barningham?

Barningham is a calm village with about 60 houses. It's a special "conservation village," which means its historic character is protected.

The village has a large green space in the middle. There's also a church and a grand house where a local landowning family lives. A village hall is used by different local groups. The village also has a pub that was recently fixed up.

Barningham is right next to open moorland that stretches towards Cumbria. This makes it a great spot for walking and exploring the local valleys and hills. The village even has a local history group. They have a website and help people learn about their family history in the area.
