The Barony of Hamilton of Hameldon is a special title in the Peerage of Great Britain. A "peerage" is a system of titles like Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron. These titles are often passed down through families.

This particular title has been held by the Duke of Hamilton for a short time and by the Duke of Argyll since 1799.

How the Barony Began

The Barony of Hamilton of Hameldon was created in 1776. It was given to a lady named Elizabeth Gunning. She was also known as the Duchess of Hamilton.

Elizabeth Gunning first married James Douglas-Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton in 1752. After he passed away in 1758, she married again. Her second husband was John Campbell. He later became the 5th Duke of Argyll.

When Elizabeth Gunning passed away in 1790, her Barony title went to her son from her first marriage. This was the 8th Duke of Hamilton.

Passing Down the Title

The 8th Duke of Hamilton did not have any sons. So, when he passed away, the Barony went to his half-brother. This half-brother was the Marquess of Lorne. He was Elizabeth Gunning's oldest son from her second marriage.

Later, the Marquess of Lorne became the 6th Duke of Argyll. Since then, the Barony of Hamilton has always been held by the person who is also the Duke of Argyll.

What is a Coat of Arms?

A coat of arms is a special design that represents a family or a person. It's like a unique symbol that tells a story about their history and achievements. Noble families often have their own coats of arms.

The coat of arms for Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon, shows her family's original design. It was updated to include special symbols for her new title. The main shield is red. It has a white stripe across the middle. On the stripe are three red cross shapes. Above and below the stripe are three white doves, each wearing a gold crown.
