History of Baudette
Baudette became an official city in 1907. It started as a place where steamboats could land and a town for cutting wood. A sawmill was built here after a railroad came through in 1901.
The city was named after Joseph Beaudette. He was a trapper of French-Canadian background who had lived in the area since the 1880s. The post office first opened in 1900 and was called "Port Hyland." But in 1901, its name was changed to "Baudette."
A big fire, called the Baudette Fire of 1910, destroyed most of the city. But the people quickly rebuilt it. Many lives were saved because a train with empty cars came across the river. It took people to safety on the other side in Rainy River, Ontario.
Where is Baudette?
Baudette is located along the Rainy River. The Baudette River also flows into the Rainy River here. The city is right across the river from Rainy River, Ontario in Canada. It is also southeast of the large Lake of the Woods.
Baudette and Rainy River, Ontario, are connected by the Baudette–Rainy River International Bridge. This bridge helps people travel between the two countries.
Three main roads go through Baudette:
- Highway 11 goes northwest to Warroad (about 36 miles). It also goes east to International Falls (about 68 miles).
- Highway 72 goes south to Blackduck (about 76 miles).
- Highway 172 goes north to Wheelers Point (about 12 miles). This point is where the Rainy River flows into Lake of the Woods.
The city covers about 4.66 square miles. Most of this area is land, and a small part is water.
