History of Warroad
Warroad was once a very large village for the Ojibwe people on Lake of the Woods. The Ojibwe fought a long war against the Sioux people. They were fighting for control of the lake's important rice fields. The Sioux often came into the area using the Red and Roseau Rivers. This route ended at the Warroad River. This path was known as the old "war road," which is how the river and the village got their name.
In the 1900s, Warroad had a strong business in fishing. Over time, this changed to sport fishing and tourism. For many years, boats regularly traveled to the islands and to Kenora, Ontario, in Canada. The lumber industry also grew a lot. This brought the Great Northern and Canadian National railways to town. It also led to the start of one of the biggest window makers, Marvin Windows.
Hockeytown, USA
Warroad is also known as "Hockeytown USA." This is because of its amazing history with ice hockey. The Warroad High School hockey teams have won many state championships. The boys' team won in 1994, 1996, 2003, and 2005. The girls' team won in 2010, 2011, 2022, and 2023.
Many players from Warroad have gone on to play in the NHL and in the Olympic Games. In fact, every U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey team that has won a gold medal has had a player from Warroad! Another important part of Warroad's hockey story is the Warroad Lakers. This amateur team played from 1947 to 1997.
