The battle pitted Steele's Union troops against Price's Confederates.

The Battle of Bayou Fourche took place on September 10, 1863. It was a fight during the American Civil War near Little Rock, Arkansas. Union soldiers, led by Frederick Steele, fought against Confederate soldiers, led by Sterling Price.

The main fighting happened when Union cavalry, led by John W. Davidson, crossed to the south side of the Arkansas River. They forced the Confederate cavalry, led by John S. Marmaduke, to leave their strong position behind Bayou Fourche. Because they were outnumbered, Price's Confederate forces left Little Rock. They moved south to Arkadelphia. The Union army then took control of Little Rock. This was the final action in a military plan that started on August 18.

Confederate Army Forces

The Confederate army was led by Major General Sterling Price. In July 1863, Price took command because the previous leader, Lieutenant General Theophilus H. Holmes, became ill. On September 6, Brigadier General Marmaduke had a duel where he fatally wounded Brigadier General Walker. Colonel Dobbins then took over Walker's group. On September 10, Marmaduke arrested Dobbins, and Colonel Newton took command. Price later ended Dobbins's arrest.

The Confederate army had about 7,749 soldiers ready for duty. About 6,500 were north of the Arkansas River, and 1,250 were south of the river. In total, they had about 10,665 soldiers and 32 cannons. The Confederates had 12 soldiers killed, 34 wounded, and 18 missing.
