History of Beach

Beach was first settled around the year 1900. It got its name from Captain Warren C. Beach. He was a U.S. Army officer who explored the area in 1880 while surveying for a railroad.

The town's post office opened in 1902. Beach officially became a village in 1908 and then a city in 1909. In 1912, it was chosen to be the county seat for Golden Valley County.

Theodore Roosevelt's Visit

In April 1911, Theodore Roosevelt, who used to be president and had spent time in the nearby Badlands, visited Beach. He also stopped in Medora. During his visit to Beach, Roosevelt gave a speech. He mentioned that he was surprised the town existed in such a dry area. This was likely because of his own tough experiences ranching there and the harsh blizzards he had faced.

Roosevelt's speech focused on protecting nature. He suggested that ranchers should only have one cow for every 12 acres of land. This idea was not very popular with the local ranchers.

Later, in October 1918, Roosevelt was asked to visit the Badlands again. He decided not to go. He felt it was better to remember the place as it was, saying that things change and the "romance" can be lost.

Geography of Beach

Beach is located in the western part of North Dakota. It is very close to the border with the state of Montana.

The city covers a total area of about 2.57 square miles (6.67 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
