Bear Mountain: A Tall Peak in Georgia

Bear Mountain is a significant landmark in Georgia. It's part of the Appalachian Mountains, which stretch across eastern North America. Being the highest point in its county and the wider Atlanta area makes it a special place.

Where is Bear Mountain?

This mountain is located in the northwest and west-central parts of Cherokee County, Georgia. It's a natural landmark that helps define the landscape of the area. Its height makes it stand out among the surrounding hills.

Why is Bear Mountain Important for TV and Radio?

Bear Mountain is not just a natural wonder; it's also a key location for broadcasting. Many TV and radio stations use its height to send their signals far and wide. Placing antennas on top of a tall mountain helps signals travel further without being blocked by other landforms.

TV Stations on the Mountain

One important TV station, WPXA-TV 31, has its main antenna on Bear Mountain. Even though its official "city of license" is Rome, Georgia, which is two counties away, it's considered part of the Atlanta TV market. This means it helps bring TV shows to many homes in the Atlanta area. Sometimes, getting a clear signal can be tricky because of how far out the mountain is and changes in TV technology.

Radio Stations on the Mountain

Bear Mountain has also been home to various radio stations. For example, W213BV on 90.5 FM used to be a small "broadcast translator." This type of station helps relay, or send on, signals from other radio stations to a wider area. Another station, WCHK-FM 105.5, also started on Bear Mountain. It used to play the same programs as WCHK AM 1290. Over time, this station moved to a different frequency and location, but Bear Mountain is still recognized as a potential spot for future broadcasting.
