Beginish (which means Beiginis or 'little island' in Irish) is a small, uninhabited island in County Kerry, Ireland. It is one of the beautiful Blasket Islands, located off the west coast of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean.
Island Geography
Beginish is a very low island, reaching only about 14 meters (46 feet) above sea level. It covers an area of 13 hectares, which is roughly the size of 26 football fields! You can find Beginish in a stretch of water called Blasket Sound. This sound is located between the much larger Great Blasket Island and the mainland of Ireland.
Wildlife Haven
Even though no people live on Beginish, it is a very important place for animals. The island is home to a large group of Arctic terns. These amazing birds are known for their incredible long-distance migrations, flying from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back each year!
Beginish is also a vital spot for grey seals. It is the main birthing site for these marine mammals in the area. This means many grey seal pups are born on the shores of Beginish, making it a special nursery for them.
Other Beginish Islands
It's interesting to know that there is at least one other island in County Kerry with the same name, Beginish! This other island is located near Valentia Island, at the mouth of the River Ferta. So, if you hear about Beginish, make sure you know which one people are talking about!
