History of Belleair
Early Beginnings: Belleair Heights
Belleair started in 1896 as a planned vacation spot. A rich railroad owner named Henry B. Plant built the famous Belleview Hotel here. The area was first known as Belleair Heights. It had some homes, places for animals, and a large building called a coliseum. This coliseum could seat 200 people and was used for bicycle races and political meetings. Over 300 acres of land were cleared, and streets were laid out. However, not many people moved there, so the population stayed small.
Growth and Reincorporation
By the mid-1900s, Belleair Heights slowly faded as nearby towns grew closer. The name Belleair Heights stopped being used around the 1930s. In 1919, a company bought the hotel. In 1924, they announced a new plan to build a community called Belleair Estates.
This new community was designed by a famous landscape architect named John Nolen. The idea was to create Florida's most exclusive winter home area. The town officially became a town in late 1924. It was then re-established in 1925 with its current name, Belleair. Building continued until a big economic downturn in 1926, which later contributed to the Great Depression across the country. After World War II, Belleair really started to grow. More than two-thirds of the town's homes were built after 1950.
There was once a popular tourist spot in Belleair called the Eagles Nest Japanese Gardens. It opened in 1938 but closed in 1952.
