Discover Berry Mountain

Berry Mountain is known for its natural beauty and fun activities. It's a popular spot for people who love to explore the outdoors. The mountain's peaks offer a chance to see different kinds of plants and trees.

What Makes Berry Mountain Special?

The mountain is covered mostly by a type of forest called a northern hardwood forest. This means you'll see trees like maple, birch, and beech. But there's also a special 65-acre (260,000 m2) field of wild azaleas. These plants have beautiful, colorful flowers.

A microwave tower stands on the east peak of Berry Mountain. This tower helps with communication signals.

Fun Things to Do

Two popular hiking trails cross Berry Mountain. The 35 mi (56 km) Taconic Crest Trail goes over the west peak. The 12.1 mi (19.5 km) Taconic Skyline Trail crosses the east peak. These trails are perfect for hiking and exploring.

Near the mountain tops, you'll find a park road and a campground. These are open during the summer months. They make it easy for visitors to enjoy the area.

One of the most interesting spots is Berry Pond. It's located on the ridge between Berry Mountain and a smaller hill called Berry Hill. At about 2,150 feet (660 m) high, Berry Pond is thought to be the highest natural pond in all of Massachusetts!

Where is Berry Mountain?

The west side and the very top of Berry Mountain are in a town called Hancock, Massachusetts. The eastern parts of the mountain are in Pittsfield.

The mountain ridge continues in both directions. To the south, it connects to Pine Mountain and Tower Mountain. To the north, it leads to Berry Hill. West of Berry Mountain, across a valley, is West Hill.

Waterways Around the Mountain

Water from the west side of Berry Mountain flows into Berry Pond Creek. This creek then joins Wyomanock Creek. From there, the water goes into Kinderhook Creek, then the Hudson River, and finally reaches Long Island Sound.

Water from the east side of the mountain flows into Lulu Creek and Parker Brook. These streams lead to Onota Lake. From Onota Lake, the water travels into the Housatonic River, which also empties into Long Island Sound.
