Bicknell was first settled in 1879. It was originally known as Thurber or Thurber Town. This name came from A.K. Thurber, who built the very first house in the area.

In 1897, the town had to move to a new spot. The original location had sandy soil and not enough good water. So, the whole community relocated for better living conditions.

How Bicknell Got Its Name

The town's name changed in a very interesting way! In 1914, a rich author and historian named Thomas W. Bicknell made a special offer. He was also an Education Commissioner from Rhode Island.

Mr. Bicknell offered a huge library of a thousand books to any Utah town that would rename itself after him. Another town, Grayson, also wanted the books. So, they made a deal in 1916.

Grayson decided to rename itself Blanding, which was Mr. Bicknell's wife's maiden name. As a result, the two towns shared the prize. Bicknell and Blanding each received 500 books for their libraries!
