Life and Music Career
John Edward Hawkins was born in Houston, Texas, on November 15, 1969. He started rapping in 1992. His younger brother, Patrick "Fat Pat" Hawkins, introduced him to DJ Screw, who was a rising music producer in Houston.
In 1994, Hawk, Fat Pat, DJ Screw, Lil' Keke, and Koldjack formed a group called D.E.A. They also started a record label called Dead End Records. This name came from the street where Hawk grew up in Houston. In 1998, D.E.A. released their own album called Screwed For Life. It featured other members of the S.U.C..
After his brother Fat Pat and DJ Screw passed away, Hawk made it his goal to keep their "Ghetto Dream" alive. In 1999, Hawk worked on a music collection called You Got Us Fuxxed Up. In 2000, he released his first solo album, Under Hawk's Wings. He also worked with popular artists like Lil' Flip, Lil' Keke, Big Moe, and Z-Ro. He was also featured on Lil' Troy's hit song "Wanna Be A Baller".
Keeping the Screwed Up Click Together
Big Hawk appeared on many mixtapes from Houston's underground rap scene. After DJ Screw passed away in 2000, Hawk became the main person who kept the S.U.C. group together. Because of this, people called him the "Five Star General of the Screwed Up Click."
In 2002, Hawk released his album called HAWK under his own label, Ghetto Dreams Entertainment. This album included the popular song "U Already Know." It even reached number 45 on Billboard's list of top R&B and Rap Albums.
Hawk continued to make music and collaborate with other artists. In 2004, he and Lil' Keke released "Wreckin 2K4." He was also featured on the popular song "Swang" by Trae in 2005. In 2006, Hawk even recorded a song for Nike's "Joga Bonito" World Cup soccer event.
