Abdul Bilal "Bill" Hamid (born November 25, 1990) is an American professional soccer player. He plays as a goalkeeper for Maryland Bobcats.

Bill Hamid was born in Annandale, Virginia. He was the first player from the D.C. United Academy to join the main team. He made his first professional game in May 2010. At that time, he was the youngest goalkeeper to win a game in Major League Soccer (MLS) history.

He helped D.C. United win the 2013 U.S. Open Cup. In 2014, he was named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. In 2018, he joined FC Midtjylland in Denmark and won the Danish Superliga. He later returned to D.C. United. He played 296 games for the team. He holds D.C. United records for 89 shutouts and 976 saves.

Hamid also played for the U.S. national team. He played eight games between 2012 and 2020. He helped the U.S. team win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2013 and 2017.

Bill Hamid's Soccer Journey

Starting with D.C. United

Bill Hamid joined the D.C. United main team on September 2, 2009. He was the first player from their youth academy to do so. Before this, he almost joined Celtic in Scotland. But problems with a work permit stopped the move.

He played his first professional game on May 5, 2010. It was a match against the Kansas City Wizards. D.C. United won that game. At 19 years and 161 days old, Hamid became the youngest goalkeeper to win an MLS regular season game. He broke the record set by Tim Howard.

In 2011, Hamid started 28 games for D.C. United. He continued as the main goalkeeper in 2012, playing in 27 matches. After the 2011 season, he even had a trial with English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion.

In 2012, Hamid made 88 saves, which was a record for him. During the 2012 playoffs, he got a red card in a game. But D.C. United still won and moved to the next round. Fans created a rallying cry about this moment. In 2013, D.C. United won the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Hamid played in the final game, which they won 1–0.

In 2014, D.C. United finished first in their conference. This was a big improvement from the year before. Hamid was recognized for his great play. He won the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award.

Playing in Denmark

After the 2017 season, Bill Hamid's contract with D.C. United ended. He then signed with Danish Superliga club Midtjylland. He joined them in January 2018. In his first season, he was a backup goalkeeper. He played one league game on April 22. Midtjylland ended up winning the league championship that season.

Back to D.C. United

Hamid came back to D.C. United on August 8, 2018. He first joined on a loan deal. Later, in December 2019, he signed a permanent three-year contract.

In the 2022 Major League Soccer season, Hamid played 10 games. He had a hand operation in June of that year. After the season, D.C. United signed new goalkeepers. Hamid became a free agent. He left D.C. United with team records. He had 89 shutouts and made 976 saves during his time there.

New Teams and Coaching

On March 20, 2023, Hamid joined USL Championship club Memphis 901. He played 10 games for them. He left the club in August 2023.

In 2024, Hamid played for Northern Virginia in a cup match. On April 2, 2024, Virginia Dream announced he would join them. He would be a player and a goalkeeping coach for their 2024 season.

On September 3, 2024, Maryland Bobcats announced Hamid was joining their team. Since he joined, the Maryland Bobcats have won two games in a row. Hamid has also had two "clean sheets" (meaning he didn't let any goals in). The Maryland Bobcats have now secured first place in their region.

Playing for the U.S. National Team

He helped his team beat Venezuela 1–0. He was the ninth U.S. goalkeeper to not let in a goal in his first international game.

Coach Jürgen Klinsmann chose Hamid for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The United States won this tournament. Hamid played his second game for the U.S. team on November 18, 2014.

Hamid was called up again for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He earned his second winner's medal. On July 15, he played his first competitive game for the U.S. team. He kept a clean sheet in a 3–0 win. This win helped his team finish first in their group.

On December 30, 2019, Hamid was called to play in a friendly game. It was against Costa Rica on February 1, 2020. He played for the last 14 minutes of the game. This was his first international game in over 18 months. On December 9, 2020, he played his eighth and final international game. The U.S. won 6–0 against El Salvador.
