Birkenhead Peak, also known as Mount Birkenhead, is a very tall mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It stands 2,506 meters (8,222 feet) high. This mountain is located in the Gates Valley area, which is part of the Lillooet Country in the south-central interior of British Columbia.
Discovering Birkenhead Peak's Location
Birkenhead Peak is found about halfway between the towns of Lillooet and Pemberton-Mount Currie. It has a very high "prominence" of 1,781 meters. Prominence means how much a mountain rises above the lowest point connecting it to a higher peak. This high prominence shows how much Birkenhead Peak stands out from the nearby Cadwallader Range. A pass between Blackwater Creek and Birkenhead Lake separates it from this range.
How Birkenhead Peak Got Its Name
The mountain was named by Hudson's Bay Company explorer and trader A.C. Anderson. He named it in 1842 during an exploration of a travel route. He chose the name to honor the crew of HMS Birkenhead, a ship that was famous for a brave act. A nearby body of water, Seton Lake, was also named by Anderson. He named it after one of the ship's crew members who was his school friend.
Exploring the Area Around the Mountain
The community of Birken is located at the mountain's southwest base. On its northwest side, you'll find Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park and the lake itself, which share the mountain's name. Blackwater Creek, a stream that flows into the Gates River, borders the mountain on its north side. The valley of the Birkenhead River is located to the southwest of the peak.
