A Look Back at Black Point-Green Point's Past
Black Point was once part of a large land grant called Rancho de Novato. In 1851, a man named Day settled on an island. This island is still known as Day Island today. More settlers moved to the area in 1853. Some owned land, while others were squatters, meaning they lived on land without owning it.
Lumber from Black Point helped build part of the USS Saginaw. This was a steamship used by the navy until 1870. Deer Island, located east of Olive Avenue, was a real island in the early 1900s. A house on the island was only reachable by boat. The owner, Antonio DeBorba, later helped create the land for Highway 37.
The first Black Point post office opened in 1865. Later, the Grandview post office changed its name to Black Point in 1944. Trains still run through Black Point-Green Point twice a week on the Brazos Railroad Subdivision. These trains cross the Black Point Railroad Bridge, which was built in 1911. The fields south of Black Point once held the Black Point Communications Annex. This was an antenna system used to talk with the Hamilton Air Force Base.
