About Black Prince Mountain

Black Prince Mountain is a majestic peak found in the Valhalla Ranges, which are part of the larger Selkirk Mountains in southeastern British Columbia, Canada. It's located inside Valhalla Provincial Park, a protected area known for its wild beauty. The mountain is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) west-northwest of another peak called Lucifer Peak. It's also not too far from Slocan Lake and the town of Slocan.

How Did It Get Its Name?

The name "Black Prince Mountain" is quite interesting! It refers to the "Prince of Darkness," which is another name for the Devil. This mountain is part of a small group of peaks called the Devils Range. All the mountains in this range have names connected to devils or similar themes. Some examples include Lucifer Peak, Mount Mephistopheles, Devils Dome, Mount Diablo, Satan Peak, Devils Spire, and Devils Couch.

Weather and Water

Black Prince Mountain has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold and snowy winters. Summers are usually mild, but temperatures can still drop quite low. In winter, temperatures can fall below −20 °C (−4 °F). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C (−22 °F).

The snow and rain that fall on the mountain eventually melt and flow away. This water drains into Gwillim Creek and Evans Creek. Both of these creeks are smaller streams that flow into the Slocan River.

Who First Climbed It?

The first time someone successfully climbed to the very top of Black Prince Mountain was in 1975. A team of four climbers made this first ascent. They were R. Anderson, S. Baker, V. Joseph, and Peter Wood. They reached the summit by climbing up the southwest ridge of the mountain.
