Devils Dome is a tall mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It stands 2,769 meters (about 9,085 feet) high! You can find it in the Valhalla Ranges, which are part of the bigger Selkirk Mountains.
It's located inside Valhalla Provincial Park. Nearby peaks include Lucifer Peak and Devils Couch. The town of Slocan and Slocan Lake are also not too far away.
Devils Dome is part of a smaller group of mountains called the Devils Range. This range also has a smaller peak next to Devils Dome, sometimes called Dark Prince. Many peaks in this range have names that sound a bit spooky, like Black Prince Mountain, Lucifer Peak, Mount Mephistopheles, Mount Diablo, Satan Peak, Devils Spire, and Devils Couch.
The name 'Devils Dome' was suggested by Pat Ridge from the Kootenay Mountaineering Club. It became official on July 27, 1977, thanks to the Geographical Names Board of Canada.
Mountain Environment
Devils Dome is in a very cold and snowy area. It has a subarctic climate. This means winters are long and very cold, with lots of snow. Summers are usually mild.
Temperatures can drop below −20 °C (which is −4 °F). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C (−22 °F).
The snow and rain that fall on the mountain melt and flow into Gwillim Creek and Evans Creek. These creeks then join the Slocan River.
First Climb
The first time anyone climbed to the very top of Devils Dome was in 1973. Three climbers named Howie Ridge, Peter Wood, and G. Stein made this first ascent.
They climbed up the mountain's southeast ridge.
