Bloomingdale is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It was first settled in 1833. This village is about 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. In 2020, about 22,382 people lived there.

History of Bloomingdale

Bloomingdale is one of the oldest villages in what is now DuPage County. The Meacham family first settled here in 1833. By the end of 1834, about 12 to 15 families had made this area their home. It was first called Meacham's Grove.

The community was located on the Chicago-Galena Highway. This road is known today as Lake Street. Bloomingdale became an important stop for stage coaches and people traveling west. At first, it was part of Cook County. Then, in 1839, it became part of DuPage County.

In 1923, the village split into two parts. The northern part wanted to grow with more businesses. The southern part wanted to stay a farming community. So, the northern part became its own village called Roselle. From 1950 to 1980, Bloomingdale's population grew a lot. It went from 338 people to 12,659.

What to See in Bloomingdale

Stratford Square Mall used to be the biggest shopping center in Bloomingdale. It had two large department stores and many smaller shops. There were also restaurants to eat at.

Old Town Bloomingdale is another interesting place. It is at the corner of Lake Street and Bloomingdale Road. This area has small businesses, restaurants, and shops. They are in old buildings from when the village was first settled.
