Blue Cypress Lake is a large lake in Indian River County, Florida. It was first called Lake Wilmington. This lake is the biggest in the Treasure Coast area and in Indian River County. It's also where the St. Johns River begins!
Many small streams feed into the lake. These include Mudfish Slough and Fisher Creek from the south. Trim Creek and Blue Cypress Creek flow in from the west. Moonshine Bay adds water from the north. All this water then flows out of the lake to the northwest. It goes into M Canal and Zigzag Canal.
Blue Cypress Lake is huge, covering over 6,500 acres (about 26 square kilometers). It is about 21 miles (34 km) around. The lake is usually about 8 feet (2.4 meters) deep. It is much larger than Lake Washington, which is north of it. The lake got its name because the cypress trees around it look blue. This happens when the morning sun shines on the water. You can find a fishing camp called Blue Cypress Lakeside Cabins about 4 miles (6.4 km) off State Road 60. A small community called Blue Cypress Village is also nearby.
