He also played on the very popular album The Black Parade (2006). Bob Bryar faced some injuries while touring. But he kept playing with the band. He helped record their fourth album before leaving My Chemical Romance in 2010. He also played on Conventional Weapons. This was the band's last release before they broke up in 2013. After leaving the band, Bryar worked behind the scenes for other bands. He then retired from music in 2014. Later, he became a real estate agent. He also helped dog rescue groups and animal shelters. Bob Bryar passed away in November 2024.

Early Life

Bob Bryar was born in Chicago, Illinois. His birthday was on December 31, 1979. He started playing drums when he was young. He played in his school's marching and jazz bands. After high school, Bryar studied sound engineering. He went to the University of Florida.

Music Career

My Chemical Romance (2004–2010)

In 2000, Bryar started working as a sound engineer. He toured with rock bands like The Used and Thrice. During this time, he met the members of My Chemical Romance. This was in 2004, when they were touring with The Used. Bryar became the drummer for My Chemical Romance. He joined after the band's tour in Japan. He officially replaced their previous drummer, Matt Pelissier. This happened shortly after the band's second album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004), was released.

Bryar appeared in most of the music videos for Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. He played on all the other releases from that album. These included Life on the Murder Scene and ¡Venganza!. Bryar also played on My Chemical Romance's third album. This album was The Black Parade (2006). Music critics really liked the album. It was also a big success, selling millions of copies.

During the filming of the music video for "Famous Last Words", Bryar got some burns. He was too close to the flames. Because of this, the band had to cancel a show. A month later, Bryar had to go to the hospital. He had an infection from the video shoot. The band canceled two more shows to be with him. In 2007, Bryar had problems with his wrist. This caused the band to cancel another show. He explained that he had wrist issues for years. He even got a "golf ball-sized lump" on his wrist. He temporarily stopped touring. Another drummer, Pete Parada, filled in for him. Even though he couldn't play, Bryar still toured with the band. He helped with the pyrotechnics (fire effects). He returned to playing in January 2008.

My Chemical Romance went back to the studio in 2009. They recorded their fourth album. On March 3, 2010, the band announced that Bryar had left. Frank Iero, the rhythm guitarist, shared the news. He said it was a hard decision for everyone.

After My Chemical Romance (2010–2024)

The band released their fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, in 2010. Bryar was given credit for writing five songs. These included the popular songs "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)" and "The Only Hope for Me Is You".

The band also released Conventional Weapons. This was a collection of ten songs. They were recorded in 2009, before Bryar left. All these songs feature Bryar playing drums. My Chemical Romance broke up in March 2013.

After leaving My Chemical Romance, Bryar stayed in the music business. He worked behind the scenes for other bands. On October 2, 2014, Bryar said he was leaving music. He then became a real estate agent. However, in February 2015, he said he might want to return to music.

In July 2016, My Chemical Romance posted a video online. It hinted at something happening on "9/23/16". This led to rumors that the band would reunite. But it was actually a new version of The Black Parade. This reissue was called The Black Parade/Living with Ghosts. It included unreleased songs. In September 2016, Bryar gave an interview. He talked about recording and touring for The Black Parade. This was his first interview since leaving the band.

In January 2020, Bryar remembered Rush drummer Neil Peart. He talked about how much he admired Peart. In June 2021, Bryar announced he had stopped drumming for good. He mentioned his ongoing wrist problems. He also wanted to try "something new."

Equipment

When he was with My Chemical Romance, Bryar used drums made by C&C. This company makes custom drums. He used Sabian "Paragon" cymbals. He also used Remo drum heads. Bryar played with Vic Firth’s "ROCK" drumsticks. Later, he switched to Vater’s "XD-Rock" sticks in 2007.

Helping Others

After leaving My Chemical Romance, Bryar helped many dog rescue groups. In June 2021, Bryar sold his Helena-themed drum kit online. He gave the money to an animal shelter in Franklin, Tennessee. In October 2022, Bryar sold his uniform from The Black Parade. He gave the money to animals affected by Hurricane Ian. These animals were in Florida and South Carolina. He said the uniform was "just sitting in a box" and people needed help.
