The Salix bonplandiana is a type of willow tree that lives for many years. It is also known as the Bonpland willow. In Spanish, people call it ahuejote, sauce, ahujote, or huejote.

This tree naturally grows in southern and southwestern Mexico. Its home also stretches into central Guatemala. In western Mexico, you can find it in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. It also pops up in other smaller places, like Baja California Sur and northern Sonora. You can even find it in parts of central and southeast Arizona in the United States. It especially likes places that are higher up and have plenty of water.

Where Does the Bonpland Willow Grow?

In Mexico, the Bonpland willow often grows near the Pacific Ocean. In southern Mexico, its range goes into the mountain areas of Pacific and central-southwest Guatemala.

Across southern Mexico, this tree is common in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This is a chain of volcanoes that stretches across the country. From there, its range extends west along the Pacific coast. It then goes north into the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. In this mountain range, the tree's home ends in southwest Chihuahua.

However, you can also find it in separate areas far from its main range. One big area is in central Arizona. Here, it grows in places like the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains (Arizona). It also grows in the "Madrean Sky Islands" region. These are like isolated mountain forests surrounded by desert. You can even find it in small, mountain-related spots in the very southwest tip of New Mexico.
