History
Boone County, Nebraska, was officially created on March 1, 1871. It was named to honor the famous frontiersman, Daniel Boone. People started settling in Boone County in the late 1860s.
One of the first settlers was S.D. Avery. In 1871, he started a farm near where the town of Albion is now. More people came because railroads were expanding. Also, the Homestead Act of 1862 made land available for new settlers.
The town of Albion was planned out in 1872. It became the county seat after a friendly competition with the town of Boone. This kind of contest was common back then. It showed how much these new towns wanted to grow.
Farming quickly became the most important part of the local economy. Farmers mainly grew wheat, corn, and later oats. The county grew fast because of its good soil and hard-working settlers.
The railroad reached Albion in the early 1880s. This was a big help for the county's growth. It allowed farmers to sell their crops in other places. It also brought even more settlers to the area. As the county grew, schools, churches, and businesses were built. They helped support the growing farming community.
