Madison County was probably named after Madison, Wisconsin, because many early settlers came from there. That city, in turn, was named after James Madison, who was the fourth President of the United States. Madison County is also part of the larger Norfolk area. If you see a Nebraska license plate with the number 7 at the beginning, it means the car is from Madison County! This system started in 1922, and Madison County had the seventh-highest number of registered vehicles back then.
