Boonville is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. It's located in the northeastern part of the county. In 2010, about 4,555 people lived there. The town also includes a smaller area called the Village of Boonville. Both the town and village are named after Gerrit Boon, who worked for the Holland Land Company.

History

The area that is now Boonville was first settled around 1795. The Town of Boonville was officially created in 1805. It was formed from a part of the Town of Leyden.

Geography

Boonville covers a total area of about 72.6 square miles (188.0 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 71.9 square miles (186.2 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.7 square miles (1.8 square kilometers), is water.

The northern edge of the town borders Lewis County. The Black River forms the eastern border of Boonville.

Fun Things to Do

Boonville is a popular spot for snowmobile fans. It's even called "The Snow Capital of the East" because of its many snow festivals. In 2008, over 6,000 people came to the Oneida County Fairgrounds in Boonville. They watched exciting snowmobile races on an ice track.

The fairgrounds in Boonville are also home to other big events. These include the annual Oneida County Fair and the Woodsmen's Field Days. In 2013, over 44,000 people visited the fairgrounds for the Woodsmen's Field Days, which was a record!

The old Black River Canal was built to connect to the famous Erie Canal.

Climate

Boonville has a climate with big changes between seasons. Summers are warm to hot, and often humid. Winters are cold and can be very snowy. This type of weather is called a humid continental climate.

It snows a lot in winter because of something called the "lake effect." This happens when cold air moves over warmer lake water, picking up moisture and dropping it as snow. Rain and snow happen pretty evenly throughout the year.

Education

Most of the town of Boonville, including the village, is part of the Adirondack Central School District. A smaller part of the town belongs to the Remsen Central School District.
