Leyden is a small town located in Lewis County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 1,785 people lived there. It is in the southern part of Lewis County, just north of the city of Rome.

History of Leyden
Early Settlement and Formation
People first started settling in the area that is now Leyden around 1794. The town of Leyden was officially created in 1797. It was formed from a part of the town of Steuben, which was then in Oneida County. Leyden was part of a land area known as the "Inman Triangle."
Changes to Town Borders
Over the years, the town of Leyden gave up some of its land to help create new towns. For example, parts of Leyden became the towns of Watson in 1821 and Lewis in 1852.
Other areas that were once part of Leyden also helped form Brownville (in Jefferson County in 1802), Boonville (in Oneida County in 1805), and a section of Wilna (in Jefferson County in 1813).
Leyden's Name and Waterways
The town of Leyden is named after the city of Leiden in the Netherlands. A place called Port Leyden, located within the town, used to be a busy port on the old Black River Canal.

Rivers and Borders
The Black River forms the eastern border of the town. The southern border of Leyden is also the border of Oneida County.
Main Roads and Highways
Two important highways, New York State Route 12 and New York State Route 12D, run through Leyden from north to south. Route 12 runs closer to the Black River.

- Florence Augusta Merriam Bailey – She was an ornithologist, which means she studied birds. She was born in Locust Grove in 1863.
- Wallace B. Douglas – He was a lawyer, judge, and politician in Minnesota. He was born in Leyden.
