Lewis is a small town located in Lewis County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 854 people lived there.
The town of Lewis gets its name from its county. The county itself was named after Morgan Lewis, who was a governor of New York a long time ago. Lewis is found on the southern edge of Lewis County. It is located north of a city called Rome. Most of the people living in Lewis reside in the southern part of the town.

History of Lewis
People first started settling in the area around the year 1800. Two families arrived in 1798, but they only stayed for about two years. More permanent settlers began to arrive in 1799. In 1831, many new settlers from other countries moved to the area, which helped the town grow.
The town of Lewis was officially created in 1852. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Leyden and West Turin.
Geography of Lewis
Lewis covers a total area of about 65.1 square miles (169 km2). Most of this area, about 64.6 square miles (167 km2), is land. The rest, about 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), is water.
The southern border of the town is also the border of Oneida County. The Mohawk River begins in the eastern part of Lewis. Its headwaters are found there.
Roads and Highways
New York State Route 26 is an important highway that runs north and south through the eastern part of Lewis. In West Leyden, this highway meets New York State Route 294. Another main road is County Road 46, also known as Osceola Road. This road goes east and west through the southern part of the town. It connects Leisher Mill to West Leyden.

- Fish Creek Reservoir – A large reservoir (a place where water is stored) located south of Swancott Mill.
- Freeman Mill – Another hamlet, found northwest of Parson Mill.
- Parson Mill – A hamlet located west of Fey Mill, right on County Road 46.
- Prussian Settlement – This spot is west of West Leyden, where County Road 46 meets Kirk Road. It has a few houses and a cemetery.
- Sunset Corners – A location in the north-central part of the town, just north of Freeman Mill.
- Swancott Mill – A hamlet located on County Road 46, west of Freeman Mill.
- Swancott Hill State Forest – A state forest area located near the southern border of the town, south of Swancott Mill.
- West Leyden – A hamlet in the eastern part of the town. It's located on NY-26, where it crosses NY-294 and County Roads 46 and 47.
