History of West Turin
The first settlers arrived in the West Turin area around 1796. They built their homes near what is now Constableville.
West Turin became its own town in 1830. It was created from a part of the town of Turin. Over time, West Turin became smaller as new towns were formed from its land. These new towns included Montague in 1850 and Osceola in 1844.
Today, the town of West Turin also includes the area that used to be the town of Highmarket. Highmarket was once a separate town, formed from West Turin in 1852. But it was later dissolved in 1973 and became part of West Turin again.
Geography of West Turin
West Turin covers a total area of about 102.4 square miles (265.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 102.1 square miles (264.3 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.3 square miles (0.8 square kilometers), is water.
The Black River forms the eastern border of the town. West Turin is located on the Tug Hill Plateau. This is a high, flat area in northwestern New York.
Several main roads run through West Turin. These include New York State Route 26, New York State Route 12D, and New York State Route 12. Routes 26 and 12D are north-south highways. Route 12 also runs north-south and is located close to the Black River.
West Turin's Climate
West Turin has a type of weather called a warm-summer humid continental climate. This means it has four distinct seasons.

Usually, the ground is covered with snow from November to April. Because West Turin is high up, it is one of the coldest, snowiest, and wettest places in New York State.
Summer days are warm, but the nights cool down quickly. West Turin gets a lot of rain all year. However, spring is usually the driest time, with about 3 to 5 inches of rain each month. Fall is the wettest, with about 5 to 6 inches of rain per month.
The hottest temperature ever recorded in West Turin was 94°F (34°C). This happened on June 28, 2005, and again on August 10, 2001. The coldest temperature ever recorded was -40°F (-40°C). This extreme cold occurred on January 25, 26, and 27 in 2004.
