Montague is a small town in Lewis County, New York, United States. In 2010, only 78 people lived there, making it a very quiet place! The town got its name from Mary Montague Pierpont, whose father originally owned the land.
Montague is on the western edge of Lewis County. It is located west of Lowville, which is the main town for the county. Montague is also southeast of Watertown.

History of Montague
The first people started settling in Montague around 1846. In 1850, the town of Montague was officially created. It was formed from a part of the town of West Turin.
The town's population was highest in 1880, with 975 people living there. Today, Montague is well-known for its fun snowmobile trails.
Geography and Land
Montague covers a total area of about 65.3 square miles (169.16 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 65.1 square miles (168.74 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.2 square miles (0.42 square kilometers), is water.
The western border of Montague is also the border between Jefferson County and Oswego County.
Weather and Climate
The small community of Hooker (New York) in Montague has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means it has warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
Montague is located on the northern part of the Tug Hill Plateau. This area is famous for getting some of the most snow in all of New York. Hooker holds the state record for the most snow in one winter season. It received an amazing 466.9 inches (11.86 meters) of snow during the winter of 1976-1977!
Montague also holds a state record for the most snowfall in a 24-hour period. This happened from January 11–12, 1997, but it's not officially recognized by the National Weather Service.

Communities and Places in Montague
- Gardners Corners – This is a place located in the northeastern part of the town.
- Hooker – A small community, called a hamlet, found in the southwestern part of Montague.
- Liberty Corners – You can find this spot in the northwestern area of the town.
- Parkers – Another hamlet located in the eastern part of the town, just south of Rector.
- Rector – This hamlet is in the northeastern section of Montague.
- Sears Pond – A small lake located near the center of the town.
- Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area – This is a special area set aside to protect nature. It's in the eastern part of Montague.
